Floods: Over 6,500 victims at Johor relief centres today

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has risen to 6,564 people at 8am on Monday (Jan 8) compared to 3,322 people at 8pm on Sunday(Jan 7) night.

The state disaster management committee said that the victims are from 1,819 families that are currently placed at 51 temporary relief centres (PPS) at six affected districts.

“The highest number of victims is Kota Tinggi with 2,964 people, followed by Johor Baru with 1,844 people, Kluang with 1,633 people, Kulai with 86 people, Segamat with 20 people, and Pontian with 17 people.

“While the PPS with the highest number of evacuees is at Dewan Kampung Maju Jaya in Tebrau, Johor Baru with 519 victims, followed by Dewan Raya Taman Kota Jaya in Tenggara, Kota Tinggi with 376 victims, and SK Bukit Mutiara also in Tebrau,” it said in a statement.

One road in Johor Baru has also been closed to all vehicles due to flooding at Jalan Maju Jaya-Seelong.

“Kota Tinggi has six road closures involving Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang, Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kulai, Jalan Tai Hong (Taman Scientex), Jalan Tai Hong (Jambatan Kecil), Jalan Mawai Lama, and Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing,” it said.

There are still six rivers that have reached a dangerous level; Sungai Kahang in Kluang, Sungai Siam in Kulai, Sungai Linggiu, Sungai Johor (near Kota Tinggi town), Sungai Kepala Orang, and Sungai Johor (Rantau Panjang).
