She was in the living room waiting for her scotch pies to cook on April 19 when her smoke alarm started going off.

She told Edinburgh Live: “I was sitting watching telly and decided I was getting a bit hungry.

“I went through to put some mince pies on and came back through to the living room and sat down. Within minutes, the smoke alarm was going off.

“I phoned the fire service and they couldn’t have been better, they were there within minutes.”

Crews managed to extinguish the blaze but Margaret’s kitchen was left with smoke damage.

She is now urging other families not to leave their air fryer unattended – even for a few minutes.

She added: “My daughter went home and threw hers out.

“If you’ve got an air fryer, please do not leave the room when its on.

“Sometimes I’ve thought of just popping for a shower when something was in the air fryer, but I really think people shouldn’t be doing that.

“I’m so worried other families might be put in the same situation.”

I’m a foodie but I hate airfryers – they’re a fad and a waste of money

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.26am on Friday, 19 April, to reports of a dwelling fire on Great Michael Rise, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and specialist resource, and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a two-storey property.

“Crews worked to make the area safe before leaving the scene. No casualties have been reported.”

We told how Brits were issued an urgent safety warning after the number of blazes caused by air fryers almost quadrupled in a year.

The number of infernos where air fryers were listed as a possible reason soared from 23 in 2022 to 93 in 2023 – an increase of 403 per cent.

The latest figures are 15 times higher than blazes in 2018 – when just six fire service incident reports referenced the hot ticket speedy cooker.
