Mumbai gets a heatwave warning from IMD, temperature to soar to 40 degrees

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Thane, Raigad districts, and certain areas of Mumbai from April 27 to 29. IMD scientist Sushma Nair told Press Trust of India that an anti-cyclonic circulation over these regions will cause temperatures to rise, with the peak expected on April 27 and 28.
This marks the second heatwave alert issued for Mumbai and its surroundings this month. On April 15 and 16, the region experienced severe hot weather, with temperatures in some parts of Navi Mumbai reaching 41 degrees Celsius.

In response, the IMD has recommended precautionary measures such as avoiding prolonged exposure to heat, staying hydrated by drinking ample water, wearing light-colored and loose-fitting cotton clothing, covering the head with a wet cloth, hat, or umbrella when outdoors during peak afternoon hours, and scheduling strenuous activities for cooler times of the day.

Hot and humid conditions are anticipated in isolated areas of Konkan till 27th. The maximum temperature, expressed in percentiles, is expected to range between the 90th and 95th percentile in the next 24 hours, with isolated pockets exceeding the 98th percentile thereafter. Similarly, minimum temperatures are forecasted to be between the 90th and 95th percentile in isolated parts of North Konkan on April 25th, and surpassing the 98th percentile on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th days. Relative humidity and wind speed are not expected to undergo significant changes over the next five days in the region.

In Madhya Maharashtra, there will be a gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the next five days. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter.Regarding temperature percentiles, the maximum temperature is anticipated to be below the 90th percentile on April 23rd and 24th, and between the 90th and 95th percentile thereafter. Conversely, minimum temperatures are forecasted to be below the 90th percentile on April 23rd and 24th, and surpassing the 98th percentile thereafter.

IMD weather forecast for Marathwada

In Marathwada, there will be a gradual increase in maximum temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the next five days. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter.

The maximum temperature percentiles are anticipated to be below the 90th percentile, while the minimum temperature percentiles are also expected to be below the 90th percentile for the next two days, and then surpass the 98th percentile thereafter.
