MSNBC Analyst Defends Trump Lawyer After George Conway’s Sexist Comment

MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin scolded frequent anti-Trump MSNBC guest George Conway on Saturday after he made a comment on X (formerly Twitter) that was clearly about Donald Trump attorney Alina Habba.

After the verdict against Trump in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case on Friday, Habba has faced enormous criticism and some ridicule, including from other former Trump attorneys, for losing the case and for what MSNBC’s Michael Steele called her “performative” defense.

Conway was naturally among the vocal critics, and on Saturday took a shot at Habba without typing out her name, although the object of his ridicule was not lost on anyone who replied — including MSNBC’s Rubin.

“I was gonna tweet ‘silicone doesn’t make you smart’ in response to something on here but I thought better of it and didn’t do it and I’m not gonna say whom it was about😇,” he wrote, sending the dig at Habba’s appearance and implication she’s had plastic surgery on her breasts by saying he wasn’t sending it.

Like everyone who read the comment and everyone who replied, Rubin missed no part of the insult was mistaken or mysterious, and responded in defense of Habba.

“You know that in many respects you and I agree on our legal analysis. But here’s one place where we diverge silicone may not make anyone smarter, but it doesn’t make anyone dumber or weaker either,” said Rubin. “Shaming women for their looks and/or aesthetic choices in this still deeply misogynistic world is no more cool when directed to women loyal to Donald Trump than it is when applied to E. Jean Carroll and her allies.”

With the meaning plain, a few moments later Rubin tempered her comments by saying she knows Conway “to be genuinely invested in women’s autonomy and professional success, including mine.”

Conway then replied with a lengthy response in which he said he wasn’t doing the thing he was apologizing for doing, and repeatedly pointed out he never said a name, wink wink, before referring specifically to a comment made by Habba recently on whether being attractive has helped her in her career, in order to make it clear that the person he claimed he wasn’t identifying had it coming anyway.

Fair, Lisa. I’m sorry if I offended you, or anyone else. In truth, I don’t question the attractiveness of any person, including (and especially, I confess) the person who I could have been referring to, and don’t seek to shame anyone for their looks or aesthetic choices (with the exception of people who have a penchant for wearing unnaturally orange makeup(.

But if someone—again, not specifying who that might be—were to suggest that it’s better for a woman to better pretty rather than smart, because a woman could fake being smart, I think that person deserves a little grief for that, even though I didn’t specify whom that might be. Particularly if that person engaged in idiotic and exceedingly mendacious behavior before a court of law and the public at large. Speaking hypothetically of course.

Again, I apologize if I’ve given offense. If I had named anyone in the tweet I would take it down. But since I didn’t, I’ll let it stand and I’ll own the lumps.

Rubin responded that she wasn’t offended, and agreed that “smart beats pretty” in her wrap-up response. To which Conway replied with an emoji.

Others in the replies were equally not mystified by what Conway was saying and disagreed with Rubin that there was anything wrong with it.

For her part, Rubin in a separate tweet thread pointed out that misogyny isn’t specific to any political party or political viewpoint. She did not specify whom the comments were about or prompted by.

Still, despite the apparent resolution, a little while later Conway responded favorably to a tweet about Habba’s appearance.

“Interesting” is certainly a word to use for the series of events.
