Mpumalanga’s provincial government has initiated a groundbreaking educational initiative by integrating coding and robotics into the curriculum of 128 schools, marking a significant step forward in technological literacy among learners.

During her address at the State of the Province on Friday, Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane highlighted the successful progress of the pilot programme. Emphasising its implementation across schools spanning from Grade R to Grade 3 and Grade 7.

128 schools embrace coding and robotics

According to Mtshweni-Tsipane, “That pilot is progressing well and 128 schools, from Grade R to 3 and Grade 7, are currently doing coding and robotics.”

Since 2022, the provincial government has been committed to enhancing learner performance. They equip Grade 12 students and teachers in Quantile 1 to 3 schools with tablets and laptops, loaded with e-content.

This year, an offline application will be provided. It ensures access to learning resources beyond the classroom, irrespective of data or connectivity limitations.

Land secured for deaf school

Moreover, the Premier disclosed that land acquisition for the construction of a proposed School for the Deaf and Blind has been finalised in Emalahleni Municipality.

Once completed, this institution will accommodate 250 deaf learners currently enrolled at Bukhosibetfu Full Service School. Additionally, it will cater to 200 students from other special schools.
