Millennials swap traditional Sunday roast recipes with modern reboots

The traditional British Sunday roast is enjoying a surge in popularity thanks to social media-savvy millennials – but be warned, they are giving it a modern reboot.

“How to” videos on TikTok and Instagram are creating a new generation of chefs who are throwing out the tried and tested traditions in favour of more “trendy” approaches.

Out go well-done joints, gravy boats and boiled veg – and in come barbecued beef brisket, roasted cauliflower and “sharing platters”.

And, horror of horror, some of the new generation are swapping roast potatoes for mac ‘n cheese.

According to a survey of 2,000 under 45s, a fifth said they wouldn’t dream of serving well-done meat, or using jars of apple or mint sauce.

Traditional plates are replaced for big wooden sharing boards in almost a third of Sunday lunches.

And almost three quarters say TikTok and Instagram have been pivotal in the rise of the roast.

Instead the modern roast looks nothing like the home cooked Sunday lunch of their childhoods.

Instead it comes with a barbecued beef brisket (21 per cent) or meat substitutes such as roasted tofu (12 per cent) or vegan wellington (11 per cent).

Vegetables are whole roasted cauliflowers or roasted kale (12 per cent).

Traditional plates are swapped for big wooden sharing boards (32 per cent).

Almost three quarters (70 per cent) of under 45s say that TikTok and Instagram have been pivotal in the rise of the roast once again.

And 87 per cent of younger people say they have seen an increase in the number of people posting images of their roasts on social media and been inspired.

Over half (57 per cent) say they regularly upload images of their own Sunday lunches to their own socials.
