McDonald’s to launch its biggest burger ever in major menu change

The fast food giant announced that its chefs have created a “larger, satiating burger” that could rival Burger King’s 4oz Whopper.

It comes after McDonald’s unveiled plans in December to boost growth by focusing on core menu items.

Those who believe that the Quarter Pounder “is not enough”, as put by Bloomberg, could be in with a chance of trying the new, bigger burger during its testing phase.

McDonald’s revealed that it will be testing the new colossal burger in select restaurants across the US and globally to ensure customer satisfaction.

There’s no telling whether it will land in the UK anytime soon, but the fast food giant’s bosses are excited about the prospect.

McDonald’s CFO Ian Borden said: “Our team of chefs from around the world have created a larger satiating burger.

“We’ll be testing this burger in a few markets later this year ensuring that it has universal appeal before scaling it across the globe.”

The company believes customers are seeking better value, hence the rush to launch the larger burger that promises “superior value” compared to competitors.‌

The introduction of a larger burger is part of the chain’s Best Burger initiative, which began earlier this year and involves changes to both the preparation process and ingredients.

For instance, burgers are now seared more tightly on the grill and buns are made from a softer brioche-style recipe.

At present, McDonald’s largest single-patty offering is the Quarter Pounder, which competes closely with Burger King’s Whopper.

Despite both being comprised of patties that are said to weigh 4oz before cooking, the Whopper contains 670 calories while the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese has just 520 calories.

‌Although no price has been set, it is speculated that the burger will cost between $6 and $8 (£4.78 and £6.38).

McDonald’s is also yet to reveal the name of the supersized menu item, but confirmed it will be tested in select restaurants soon for feedback and potential adjustments to size, recipe, and price.

The fixings or sauce it will come with are also yet to be determined.

In December, CEO Chris Kempczinski assured that the planned larger burger won’t break the bank, noting: “We think we’re going to be able to deliver a great tasting large burger at a superior value to what customers can get anywhere else.”

It is understood that this will be a completely new burger or range, rather than an alteration to existing burgers.
