Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat unit, Suzuki Motor Gujarat, celebrates producing over 3 million vehicles since its start in 2017.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) announced on Wednesday that its Gujarat-based manufacturing unit, Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), has successfully crossed the milestone of producing over 30 lakh vehicles since it commenced operations in February 2017.

In a statement released by MSI, the company revealed that SMG achieved this significant milestone within just about 6 years and 11 months. The production of the final one million units was accomplished within 17 months. With an annual production capacity of 7.5 lakh units, SMG plays a crucial role in Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing ecosystem. The vehicles produced at this facility are not only distributed in the domestic market but also contribute substantially to the company’s export markets.

Mr Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, expressed his delight at reaching the 3 million cumulative production milestone in Gujarat. He credited the supportive manufacturing ecosystem provided by the state and thanked the supplier partners for their investments and collaboration, acknowledging their role in ramping up production at the facility.

Takeuchi added, “With the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, we are further enhancing our production flexibility. The production of our battery electric vehicles will also be undertaken at the Gujarat plant and is expected to start in FY 2024-25.”

Maruti Suzuki has been aligning its strategies with the Indian government’s Make-in-India vision, with 50 percent of the total vehicles exported by the company in FY 2022-23 manufactured at SMG.

Highlighting the importance of the Gujarat unit, Takeuchi stated, “The production of our battery electric vehicles will also be undertaken at the Gujarat plant and is expected to start in FY 2024-25. At present, the facility manufactures some of the popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire, and Fronx.”

Maruti Suzuki recently acquired SMG as a new subsidiary from Suzuki Motor Corporation Japan, intending to leverage the facility to boost its overall production activities in the country.

Meanwhile, November’s auto sales marked an 18 percent surge, as per data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Notably, significant growth was observed across two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles. Maruti Suzuki stood out as one of the top performers in the passenger vehicle segment, alongside Hyundai Motor and Tata Motors.
