Manipur shooting: Election Commission orders repolling in 11 Manipur stations after violence

The Election Commission of India has declared void polling at 11 stations in Manipur and appointed April 22 as the date of repolling.
The chief Electoral officer in Manipur P K Jha stated that the Election Commission of India has, under Sections 58(2) and 58A(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, directed that the poll taken on 19th April, 2024 (Friday) in respect of 11 polling stations listed in the table below of 1-Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency to be void and appointed 22nd April, 2024 (Monday) as the date for taking fresh poll at the said polling stations with hours of poll from 7 AM to PM”.

In connection with the incident of firing in which an elderly person sustained injury, police have arrested three people. There was incidents of vandalism and disruption during the first phase polls in Manipur.

Amidst incidents of vandalization of polling booths, firing between the rival groups, clashes in more than six places around 68.62 per cent of 15.44 lakh voters cast their votes in two Lok Sabha seats (one partially) in ethnic violence-hit Manipur.

The injured Khoisnam Sanayaima is 75 year old. Five people came in a car and two of them went inside the polling station while the rest remained in the car. The incident led to scattering of the voters in the area and voting in the polling station was stopped. Voters of the polling station set ablaze the EVM and VVPAT machines of the polling station.The injured person is undergoing treatment in a hospital. In 2019 the Inner and outer seat registered voters’ percentage of 81.12 percent and 84.14 percent respectively. 15 of the 28 Assembly segments of the Outer Manipur (ST) parliamentary constituency went to polls. Voting will be held in the remaining 13 Assembly segments of Outer Manipur (ST) seat in the second phase on April 26.
