Man to be charged over hit-and-run accident that killed pedestrian

SINGAPORE: A 35-year-old man will be charged in court on Saturday (Mar 16) over his involvement in a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian.

In a news release on Friday, the police said they were alerted to the accident involving a lorry and a pedestrian at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Bulim Avenue at about 9.25am on Aug 25, 2023.

“The driver (of the lorry) did not stop to render assistance to the injured and fled to Malaysia immediately after the accident,” the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said. “He did not report to the police within 24 hours.”

The pedestrian, a 57-year-old man, was taken to hospital conscious after the accident, however, he subsequently died.

Investigations established the registration number of the lorry and the driver’s identity on the same day.

“With strong cooperation and assistance rendered by the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the driver was arrested in Malaysia on Mar 14, 2024, pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts in Singapore,” SPF said.

“The driver was then handed over to the Singapore Police Force on Mar 15, 2024.”

The man will be charged in court with the offence of dangerous driving causing death.

If convicted, he could be jailed for between two and eight years, and disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Daniel Tan, the commander of the Traffic Police, thanked RMP for their assistance.

“The arrest is a testament to the excellent relationship forged between the SPF and the RMP,” he said in a statement.

“We are appreciative of their assistance and will spare no efforts to bring motorists who commit serious traffic offences and endanger the safety of other road users in Singapore and flee our borders to justice.”
