Man killed in crash on Merritt in Westport Saturday

WESTPORT — A 28-year-old Bridgeport man died after he was hit on the Merritt Parkway near Exit 42 on Saturday night, according to state police.

Around 10:40 p.m., state police said, troopers along with the local fire department and EMS responded to reports of a crash in the southbound lanes.

The accident report said Mateo Gaviria, the victim, got out of his car after he “collided against the concrete barrier in the median” that caused his car stop in the left lane while he was traveling southbound.

Another vehicle struck the rear of Gaviria’s car and hit Gaviria after the crash, according to the accident report. Troopers attempted to save Gaviria but he was pronounced dead shortly after, the report said.
