SLCPD released a timeline of the incident, which according to the department began when a store manager inside the airport contacted Airport Control Center dispatchers at approximately 9:52 p.m. Monday to report a passenger-related “disturbance.” Before SLCPD officers could locate him, airport control said that Efinger had gone through an emergency exit door onto the tarmac.

By the time officers arrived at the aircraft at 10:08 p.m., the department said, Efinger was unconscious and partially inside a wing-mounted engine. “The aircraft’s engines were rotating. The specific stage of engine operation remains under investigation,” SLCPD wrote.
Authorities said they pulled Efinger from the engine and began life-saving efforts, including CPR and the use of naloxone, a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose. Efinger died soon after. SLCPD said it will work with the medical examiner’s office will confirm the cause and manner of death.
