Mamelodi Sundowns to release club legend!

Denis Onyango’s 13-year stay at Mamelodi Sundowns appears to be drawing to a close.

The veteran Ugandan goalkeeper will reportedly be let go of by the club when his contract ends in June.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper won 10 League titles in the Premier Soccer League (Seven with Mamelodi Sundowns and three with SuperSport United).

According to the latest reports, the return of Ricardo Goss who was out on loan at SuperSport United spells the end of Onyango’s time as a player at the Brazilians!

Mamelodi Sundowns to release Denis Onyango?

“Onyango has done really well for Sundowns, but let’s be honest, age is no longer on his side. He’ll be turning 39 in May,” an insider told Citizen.

“With Ricardo Goss, who is on loan at SuperSport United doing so well, he’ll come back and become Ronwen’s understudy. And remember, Mamelodi Sundowns also have Reyaad Pieterse so they’re covered in the goalkeeping department.”

We can go all the way! – Mokwena

In other news, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena believes his side can go all the way in the CAF Champions League this year.

The Brazilians are looking to use their Africa Football League success to drive them into the Champions League.

Mokwena’s side booked their spot in the last eight after defeating TP Mazembe 1-0 on Saturday to finish top of their group.

“I think if we still have to send the message to doubters, there is something wrong,” Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena said, as quoted by Sowetan.

“For the last six years we have been in the quarterfinals, last season we were in the semifinal for the first time in four or five occasions. And we want to be that team that is always there. It is not good enough to think that you can win a continental trophy without a big stamp on the continent.

“They are there every single season in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Eventually, Mamelodi Sundowns can break the dominance of the North African sides in the competition, and we will win the Champions League.”
