Mallikarjun Kharge: Your letter justifies govt’s arrogant attitude: Mallikarjun Kharge to Jagdeep Dhankar

Leader of the opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday accused Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar of justifying “the autocratic and arrogant attitude of the government” and “denigration of Parliamentary practices and subversion of democracy”, continuing a letter war between the two.

Hitting back at Dhankar’s charge in a letter to the LoP two days ago that opposition protests in the house during the winter session were “deliberate and strategised”, Kharge said, “I would like to submit that if anything, it is the mass suspension of the opposition MPs from both houses of parliament that seems to be predetermined and premeditated by the government.”

The letter-writing series between Dhankar and Kharge over the opposition protests in parliament post the security breach incident and mass suspension of opposition MPs currently stands 2-2.

“The letter (of Dhankar) unfortunately justifies the autocratic and dictatorial attitude of the government towards parliament. The letter most shockingly justifies the denigration of parliamentary practices and subversion of democracy,” Kharge alleged in his latest letter.

Maintaining that the chairman should have been on the forefront to uphold the dignity of the house, defend parliamentary privileges, and in holding the government accountable in Parliament, Kharge said, “It would be distressing when history judges the presiding officers harshly for bills passed without debate and not seeking accountability from the government. It is disappointing that the honourable chairman feels effecting suspension facilitated legislative business by passing bills without discussion.”
