Mallikarjun Kharge writes to Amit Shah about security issues during Rahul Gandhi Yatra in Assam

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sent a letter to home minister Amit Shah, registering his concerns about the “security issues” Rahul Gandhi faced in Assam during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and sought security cover for the safety of the former party president during his yatra in the state. Kharge’s letter, incidentally, came a day after the Assam Police booked Gandhi and some of his colleagues on the charge of “wanton acts of violence”.

In his letter to Shah, Kharge said that on many occasions during Gandhi’s yatra, Assam Police has been found wanting in providing adequate security to him despite the fact he is entitled to Z+ security. Kharge said that on the first day, Assam Police was guarding BJP posters in some areas than ensuring safe passage for the yatra.

“On January 21, as the yatra returned from Arunachal Pradesh, another outrageous attack occurred on the yatra in Sonitpur district. The local Superintendent of Police happens to be the brother of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He watched to see that BJP workers attacked and manhandled the Indian National Congress Social Media team, along with our general secretary Jairam Ramesh. Ramesh’s car was attacked, while miscreants shouting anti-BJNY slogans, tearing off the BJNY sticker on the vehicle, and attempting to throw water on the passengers inside,” the Congress chief said.

“On the same day in Sonitpur district, BJP’s district party workers approached and blocked Rahul Gandhi’s convoy. BJP workers then physically assaulted Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah, resulting in him bleeding profusely,” he said.

The Congress chief said none of the miscreants have been arrested even when there was ample evidence for all listed incidents. He added that in many instances, investigation has not been initiated.
