Kriti Sanon Slams Bollywood’s Pay Gap: ‘Male Co-Stars Get 10x More Despite’

Mumbai: Riding high on the success of “Crew,” a heist comedy co-starring Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon spoke out about the gender pay gap in a recent Film Companion interview. She questioned the vast difference in pay between her and some male actors, highlighting cases where the disparity couldn’t be justified by box office performance. Scroll down to find more details.

Kriti Sanon Talks About Income Disparity

Talking to the news agency, Kriti added, “The difference in payment (between male actors and female actors) currently is huge for actually no reason. Sometimes, for no reason. Sometimes, you feel like it’s not like that person has given a hit in 10 years, so why is he getting paid 10 times (sic).”

She further elaborated on how producers attempt to justify the unequal pay. Sanon added, “A lot of the times, what the producers say is, recovery. The recovery happens with digital and satellite, which sort of happens before a film is released. Before the word kind of takes off. So to get that kind of budget from digital and satellite – because on digital and satellite, the male-centric films actually do very, very well as compared to a film on a girl. I think there’s the difference (sic).”

The actress argued that despite featuring three prominent leading ladies, the film’s budget was allegedly restricted compared to what a similar comedic project with male stars might receive. This, according to her, highlights a persisting gender disparity in film financing, echoing similar concerns raised six years ago during the production of Veere Di Wedding, another female-centric film by the same production team. The 2018 movie, which also starred Kareena Kapoor, reportedly required the actresses to accept pay cuts to meet its budgetary limitations.

About Crew

Crew is a film set in the cutthroat world of airlines. The story centers on three flight attendants who find themselves caught between a failing company and a chance to make some extra cash, albeit through illegal means. As their airline spirals towards bankruptcy, the women grapple with financial hardship and the allure of easy money.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Kriti Sanon, Diljit Dosanjh, and established Bollywood actors like Kapil Sharma and Rajesh Sharma. It was produced by a collaborative effort between Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s production company, Balaji Motion Pictures. Crew was a commercial success, grossing over ₹75 crore at the Indian box office.

Kriti Sanon is set to make a splash on Netflix with her upcoming thriller Do Patti, co-starring the renowned Kajol. This project also marks Sanon’s debut as a producer under her own banner, Blue Butterfly Films.
