Malaysia’s king to make first overseas state visit to Singapore

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s king will make an official visit to Singapore from Monday (May 6) to Tuesday at President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s invitation, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.

This will be Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s first overseas state visit since he was installed as Malaysia’s king. He last visited Singapore in 2022 as Sultan of Johor.

Sultan Ibrahim became Malaysia’s 17th king in January, more than 34 years after his father’s reign.

On his visit, he will be accompanied by Queen of Malaysia Raja Zarith Sofia, Malaysia’s Minister of Transport Anthony Loke and other senior officials.

Sultan Ibrahim and his wife will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Istana on Monday, and Mr Tharman and his wife will host a state banquet in their honour.

During the visit, he will also meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong separately.

This will be the last major visit with Mr Lee as Prime Minister. Mr Wong will officially become Prime Minister on May 15.

Sultan Ibrahim will also be hosted on a tour of the parliament chambers by Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, and observe parliamentary proceedings.

Additionally, he will visit the Thomson-East Coast Line with Singapore’s Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat.

During his visit to Singapore in 2022, Sultan Ibrahim visited the site of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Woodlands North terminus.
