MUMBAI: While a considerable number of students from traditional and professional courses will soon be seeking internship roles, the state government has issued guidelines to streamline the process. Alongside industries, NGOs, financial institutions, and banks, students can also pursue internships under professionals, such as chartered accountants, lawyers, or artists. According to the institute’s internship policy, each college must establish an internship cell, establish partnerships with industries to offer a range of internship opportunities, conduct personality development programs, among other initiatives. Colleges claim that providing internship opportunities could be challenging, especially for those with high enrollment.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 mandates that students complete an internship for 8-12 credits before finishing their course, emphasizing the importance of experiential learning through internships and on-the-job training to enhance employability and entrepreneurship skills.
As per the guidelines outlined in a government resolution (GR), students can indicate their preferences to the colleges’ internship cells. Colleges are expected to select projects based on local industry needs, make efforts to find new institutes/establishments annually, sign MoUs for better opportunities, and conduct preparatory programs throughout the year. After completing their internships, students are required to prepare a comprehensive report highlighting their experience and present it in a seminar, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience.
Vikas Rastogi, Principal Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, stated that the department has provided guidelines for institutes to adopt according to their needs. Autonomous institutions usually have existing internship systems, while others must establish cells soon. These cells will have a nodal officer and a dean or department head for proper student representation. Rastogi added that students could earn more credits by taking up longer-duration internships within the university-approved curriculum framework.
However, a college principal mentioned that creating opportunities for thousands of students, especially for colleges without placement or internship cells, would be a challenging task.
