Kedar was sentenced to five years of imprisonment on Friday following which the Maharashtra legislative secretariat issued orders to disqualify him.
Kedar was convicted by a special court in Nagpur under sections 406, 409, 468, 471, 120 (B) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code on Friday. He was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹12.5 lakhs was imposed on him.
Kedar, as chairman of the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank, is accused of causing losses to the bank of ₹150 crore in 2002. State Congress chief Nana Patole questioned the “hurry” of the legislative secretariat in disqualifying Kedar. “It seems two different law systems are being practiced in the country. In Gujarat, a BJP MP was convicted for three years, however, he was not disqualified as an MP immediately, and was given the time to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court and got a stay. In Kedar’s case, what was the hurry to issue an order on a Sunday,” questioned Patole.
