Announcing his support on X, Mark Hamill said: “I LOVE London! Lived there for years while filming & our first child was born there, in St. John’s Wood. I wholeheartedly support Sadiq Khan for Mayor on May 2.”
Hamill praised Khan — who has drawn local flak and heated protests for a controversial charge on polluting vehicles — as “a driving force in cleaning up London’s air & choosing #HopeOverFear.”
Londoners go to the polls Thursday in London’s mayoral election. Khan’s facing Conservative challenger Susan Hall and bidding for a second term in office. Opinion polls suggest Khan is the frontrunner.
Hamill’s endorsement of the Labour incumbent could come as a blow to Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a self-confessed fan of the long-running sci-fi franchise. Sunak even keeps a collection of lightsabers in Downing Street, and has spoken of his desire to make a cameo in the films.
He’s not alone. Khan’s predecessor as mayor, Boris Johnson, also declared himself a “massive” fan, revealing in 2015 that he owns a villainous Count Dooku lightsaber.
Count Dooku was approached for comment.
