Uttar Pradesh, with its 80 parliamentary seats, is a key battleground for the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, and Rashtriya Lok Dal in the upcoming general elections. The state will vote in seven phases, with phase 1 already completed on April 19. Mathura is set for polling on April 26, followed by phases on May 7, May 13, May 20, May 23, and June 1. Vote counting will take place on June 4.

This Lok Sabha seat has never been a bastion of any one specific political party. Since 1984 it has voted out the incumbent MP. Last time, Kunwar Danish Ali won on BSP’s ticket. He is contesting as a Congress candidate this time. His main challenger is BJP’s Kanwar Singh Tanwar.

A centre of Jat politics in western Uttar Pradesh, this seat has been represented by former deputy PM Chaudhary Charan Singh. In 2014 and 2019, BJP’s Satya Pal Singh won this seat by defeating RLD supremo Ajit Singh and Jayant Chaudhary, respectively. Ajit and Jayant are son and grandson of Charan Singh. This time RLD is contesting in alliance with BJP. RLD has fielded Raj Kumar Sangwan. His main rival is SP’s Amarpal Sharma. His main rivals are Dolly Sharma from Congress and Nand Kishor Pundir from BSP.
