The video shared by @taste.thee.best on Instagram is a prime example of how Indians have, over the course of time, dabbled in the art of upcycling leftover food. Turning rotis in milk cakes might sound impossible, but the user shared a the detailed recipe.
Here is how
In the video shared by the account user, a man heats a pan full of oil and fries leftover rotis until they become crispy and golden brown. He then breaks the fried rotis into small pieces and grinds them into fine crumbs using a mixer.
Next, he caramelizes sugar in a pan over medium heat until it turns golden-brown. After adding milk to the pan and stirring until a smooth paste forms, he incorporates the ground rotis into the mixture. The resulting paste is spread onto a butter-paper-lined tray, allowed to cool, and cut into squares, creating what can only be described as delightful roti milk cakes.
Netizens hit back with ‘roti cake’ and more
However, despite the innovative recipe, not everyone was impressed with the results. While some called it an insult to the actual milk cake mithai, others pointed out how this recipe provides a way to turn something healthy into unhealthy. Others have also mentioned the much simpler and traditional way of eating leftover rotis, that is, with chai – something which requires far less effort.”Can someone give it another name, you’re looting the respect of milk cake,” commented one user; while another joked, “Day 4 of ‘unhealthifying’ a healthy food.”
In relation to renaming it, one user suggested the name “Roti cake” and another “Choorma.” On the other hand, another user quipped and called it “atta ka halwa.”
