SIBU: The Kumang Gawai pageant is a showcase for Iban cultural heritage and is in no way demeaning to the community’s womenfolk, says Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
“This contest does not centre on whether or not the participants are pretty.
“This is where we exhibit our ‘ngepan’ (Iban women’s traditional costume), ‘sugu tinggi’ (headgear), crafts and more,” the Federal Works Minister said at a pre-Gawai celebration at Kapit Civic Centre on Saturday (May 11) night.
He was responding to academic Prof Datuk Dr Jayum Jawan, who said the event degraded and demeaned Dayak and Iban women, who are paraded in public.
Nanta said the pageant and its corresponding event for men are platforms to celebrate and affirm the community’s cultural heritage.
“We all understand the meaning of ‘Kumang’; it signifies the most beautiful lady. Hence, it’s improbable for us to send older women to compete.
“Let me clarify, it’s not about older women not being pretty. We want to present the finest to showcase our cultural heritage to the public.
“Therefore, if you encounter such (claims as Jayum’s), kindly leave a comment and offer advice. Look at others – they proudly exhibit their cultural heritage to ensure people are aware of it,” he said.
