Keep mushrooms fresh and stop them going slimy with 15-minute storage trick

Mushrooms are a popular food in the UK. We love to add them to a number of different dishes whether it’s a full English, a stir-fry or a curry.

They are packed full of goodness too including B vitamins and fibre and are thought to have multiple health benefits.

Research has shown they can help lower cholesterol, support brain health and even decrease the risk of cancer.

However, when it comes to storing said mushrooms you can find that they don’t last as long as you would hope. Often they will develop an unappetising slimy texture after being left in the fridge for a while.

According to experts, the key to avoiding slimy mushrooms is to store them properly.

So what is the best way to store mushrooms?

It is tempting to simply keep your mushrooms in the packaging they came in from the store, but apparently that isn’t the best choice.

Mushrooms have a sponge-like structure, and absorb moisture fairly easily and can be harder to store and keep than other produce.

Experts at The Kitchn revealed that keeping them in their packaging may cause them to hang on to this moisture.

When putting your hands into the packaging to extract the mushrooms you may find they have become off-puttingly slimy.

Luckily, there are things you can do to prevent this from happening.

There is a simple hack you can use that only takes 15 minutes.

Remove your mushrooms from their plastic container as soon as you get home from the grocery store.

Do not wash them as this will only create more moisture.

Place them on a paper towel to suck up any moisture that’s already accumulated, and let them dry out for 15 minutes or so.

Once they are dry, grab your mushrooms and toss them into a brown paper bag.

The brown paper will absorb any excess moisture and allow air to flow, keeping the mushrooms dry and fresh for up to 10 days.
