Keep bread fresh for ‘much longer’ with simple food storage hack

Sliced bread is a food staple that can be found in most kitchen cupboards and is often used for making sandwiches and toast.

However, bread does have a habit of quickly turning mouldy and stale if it’s not stored correctly.

Fuzzy green or blue spots on bread are a sign it’s turned mouldy and should be thrown away.

With this in mind, the UK’s number one food-saving app Too Good To Go has shared tips on how to store sliced bread so it lasts “much longer”.

The experts said: “If you save sliced bread, remember to store it in the fridge when you get home. This way it will last much longer, extending its expiration date.

“Always remember to use your senses before consuming it – look, smell, taste.”

If your bread has dried out, fear not, there is a way to improve the texture without resorting to using a toaster.

The experts said: “If your bread has dried out, you can spray the crusts with water or place a damp cloth over the loaf for a few minutes.

“Then, try putting it in the oven for a few minutes, so it will recover its crunchy texture.”

As a general rule, bread tends to last longer if it’s not sliced. Bread that’s sliced is more exposed to air which means it can go stale faster.

So if you buy a loaf of freshly-baked bread from the supermarket or bakery, make sure to only slice the amount that you need.

If your bread is going out of date and you still have plenty to use up, you could make a bread-and-butter pudding recipe or croutons for soup.

Alternatively, if you have a whole loaf of bread that you’ve yet to use, you can pop it in the freezer.

If it’s a sliced loaf, you can keep it in the freezer and use one slice at a time as and when you need it.
