The Ninja 500’s arrival signals a change in Kawasaki’s strategy, offering a bigger engine and updated design.
Kawasaki is bidding farewell to its Ninja 400 in the Indian market, making room for its latest addition, the Ninja 500.
According to Motorbeam, the decision to discontinue the Ninja 400 comes as the brand rolls out its new model, set to take over both locally and globally.
Unlike the Ninja 300, which enjoyed popularity thanks to its competitive pricing from local production, the Ninja 400 was shipped in as a completely built unit (CBU), making it less wallet-friendly for enthusiasts.
Despite its higher price tag, the Ninja 400 earned praise for its sleek design, agile chassis, and powerful engine, delivering solid performance across various speed ranges.
The bike boasted a 399cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled DOHC 8-valve engine, churning out 44.8 bhp at 10,000 RPM and 37 Nm at 8000 RPM, paired with a 6-speed transmission featuring a slipper clutch.
Now, with the Ninja 500 taking center stage, Kawasaki aims for a strategic move with its bigger engine and refreshed design. However, some fans are eager for the SE variant of the Ninja 500, sporting a striking Kawasaki green color and a modern TFT display, not currently available in India.
While critics suggest Kawasaki could have explored local manufacturing options for the Ninja 500, similar to the Ninja 300, to make it more affordable and widen its customer base.
As Kawasaki says goodbye to the Ninja 400, enthusiasts are eager to see what’s next in the brand’s supersport lineup and how the Ninja 500 will perform in India’s ever-changing motorcycle market.
