Karanpur: BJP Minister Surendra Pal Singh loses to Congress in Rajasthan Election

BJP suffered a setback in Rajasthan as state minister Surendra Pal Singh lost the Karanpur assembly bypoll to Congress candidate Rupinder Singh Koonar, who defeated him by a margin of 11,283 votes. This is Surendra Pal Singh’s second consecutive defeat from the seat after losing to Congress in 2018.

The election for the Karanpur seat was postponed after the death of Congress candidate and former MLA Gurmeet Singh Koonar. In the bypoll held on January 5, Congress fielded his son Rupinder Singh while BJP fielded Surendra Pal Singh again.

In the middle of the campaign, Surendra Pal Singh was inducted into the state Cabinet on December 30 as minister of state for independent charge. As per the rules, Singh had to get elected as MLA within six months of becoming minister. He will have to resign unless BJP makes some other MLA vacate a seat for him.

“The people of Sri Karanpur have defeated the pride of BJP. The public has taught a lesson to BJP,” former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot posted on X.
