If you’re looking for a delicious dinner recipe to make this weekend, burgers are always a good shout – as they feel like a real treat even though they’re so easy to prepare.
And one variety that’s been hugely popular recently is the smash burger, which is an ultra-thin patty combined with cheese and other fillings that creates the perfect feast.
And according to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, they’re very simple to make at home, and you only need a handful of ingredients to do so.
His recipe is featured in new book Simply Jamie, which focuses on easy dishes that can be whipped up fast using staple ingredients.
And this one is definitely no exception, as it can be ready and on the table in just 12 minutes.
Shared on the Happy Foodie website, this recipe comes together ultra-quick, and you only need six ingredients.
It’s said to be the ‘ultimate late night treat dinner for one’, topped with fried onions, melted cheese and your choice of ketchup and mustard.
If you’re cooking for others, simply double the ingredients to ensure you make enough. And don’t forget to serve it up with chips – you can find Jamie’s recipe for the perfect chips here.
Here’s everything you need to make the main event.
Jamie Oliver’s smash burgers
Ingredients
- 125g beef mince
- 1/4 of a small onion
- One tsp Cajun seasoning
- One burger bun
- Two gherkins
- Handful of mixed salad leaves
- Olive oil
- Ketchup and mustard to serve (optional)
Method
Peel the onion, very finely slice into rounds, then break into rings and cook in a large non-stick frying pan with one tablespoon of olive oil for a few minutes, stirring regularly, then push to one side of the pan.
Squash the minced meat into a rough pattie about ½cm thick and a bit bigger than your bun and place in the pan. Season with black pepper and the Cajun seasoning, then move the onion rings on top and use a fish slice to really smash the onions into the meat.
Cook for two minutes on each side, or until gnarly and cooked through, toasting the halved bun alongside for a minute.
Spread the bun base with ketchup, sit the burger on top, slice and layer over one gherkin, squeeze over mustard to your liking, and pop the lid on.
Slice the tomato and remaining gherkin to serve on the side with the salad leaves, or you can serve it in the bun as well.
