“Its easy, casual and fun”, said Wang, the founder of Team Wang Design, as he spoke about his most recent summer collection with Nigerian-American fashion stylist Mobolaji Dawodu called “Sparkles: I see the lights.”
The Hong Kong-born pop star, whose career started out as a singer in a South Korean boy band called Got7, has built his brand into an empire. Team Wang Design, which is responsible for several fashion releases, is just one branch on the tree.
The recent collection was quick to sell out during the first drop in July, the company said. The final release ends later this month with popular accessories like a bucket hat and sunglasses – similar to those worn by Wang – which have proved to be very popular among consumers.
Online, some fans said they struggled to get matching coloured pants and tops, as items sold out.
The collection, featuring vibrant colours, sporty aesthetics and simple design struck a tone with young Chinese people, who have been reported to be throwing away heels and opting for trainers, according to social media giant Xiaohongshu’s midyear 2024 report.
After taking a short break earlier in the year, Wang launched a slew of projects. That includes becoming the first Chinese brand to complete an auction on Joopiter, the digital-first luxury auction house founded by musician Pharrell Williams.
