Hezbollah responded by launching a barrage of rockets into northern Israel on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces said more than 50 missiles crossed into Israel from Lebanon.
The attack is the latest in an escalation of violence in the region, weeks after a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 people. Israel accused Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement of orchestrating the attack and retaliated by killing a senior Hezbollah commander in the suburbs of Beirut. The group denied it was responsible for the Golan Heights airstrike.
Negotiations on a cease-fire in Gaza, meanwhile, were paused on Friday and are set to resume next week after the U.S. presented a “bridging proposal” aimed at resolving the key differences remaining between Hamas and Israel.
The mediators involved in the talks — the U.S., Qatar and Egypt — said Washington’s proposal “bridges remaining gaps” between Israel and Hamas and “allows for a swift implementation of the deal,” according to a joint statement on Friday following discussions in Doha.
