India is consensus builder: Piyush Goyal

Abu Dhabi: India is a consensus builder and the world needs to see which countries are blocking outcomes, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said Wednesday. At the third day of the 13th ministerial conference of the WTO, he said, “India is a consensus builder, but some countries are breaking that consensus,” Piyush Goyal said.

Goyal said India has “strongly demanded” that those countries blocking the concerns of India should meet the high expectations of the world and areas of the interest India and developing countries like a permanent solution for public stockholding.

“There will be outcomes,” he said on being asked if talks were deadlocked and that “our issues are on the table” as protecting the interests of India’s farmers, fisher folk and the poor are protected. Allaying the fears of farmers, he said: “We are fighting for our farmers… I assure that there will be no change in the situation.”

“The first and foremost decision at MC13 should be to generate trust that WTO can deliver and decisions taken are met in letter and spirit or else taken to dispute,” he said.

The minister said India has demanded that the Appellate Body is restored so that unfair practices can be taken up and reiterated that issues outside the mandate of the WTO should be kept outside.
