AN AMERICAN who moved to Scotland has claimed her British friends don’t have a “grasp” of life in the US.
Bateman Solms, 22, teased Brits for not understanding US geography after her pals suggested taking a “day trip” to New York City from rural Michigan.
Bateman moved to St Andrews in 2020 and has been posting regularly to her 52,000 followers on TikTok about her life abroad.
The tongue-in-cheek video claimed that Brits do not have a clue about the lay of the land in the States because they are so used to taking the train from country to country or driving.
She recalled when her friends offered to fly into Chicago and then take a “ferry” or train” to see her in Northern Michigan.
Bateman was left stunned by her friend’s lack of understanding the America’s geography.
She captioned her viral TikTok video with, “Extra points for one of them guessing it takes 24 hours to drive from the east coast to the west coast”.
She said: “I genuinely think a lot of people in the UK don’t have a grasp of how big the US is or how disconnected we are as a country”, she said at the beginning of the clip.
The university student explained that she returns home in the summer to spend time in Michigan.
And this year, some of her pals suggested visiting her during the break
She added: “Some of my friends were talking about visiting me over the summer. They’re talking and they’re like, ‘Oh maybe we could fly into Chicago and, then would it be easier for us to take the bus or the train to you?’
“Which first of all, so sweet, and I was like, “Oh there’s not really a bus or a train.”
Her friends then asked if they should take a ferry instead for her to tell them, “No, we’re going to drive; you could fly, but I’m going to drive and it’s going to take like five hours for me to come get you, but I’ll drive.”
But that was not all as the 22-year-old was further stunned when her pals tried planning a day trip.
She added: “They were like, “Maybe we could go to New York City for a day trip.”
The video ended with her giggling adding: “So sweet”.
It resulted in hundreds of people commenting on the video.
One user said: “I can’t even take a day trip to NYC, and I live in New York.”
Another person wrote: “It’s shorter to go from Maine to Ireland then Maine to California.”
