Tom Hall, head of Lonely Planet UK, said: “As UK travellers prepare to make their holiday plans this year, we’ve pulled together our best tips and tricks on how to travel better and save money whilst doing it.

“From booking flights, to advice on safe solo travel, we’ve compiled expert recommendations that are sure to inspire your next trip!”

So how can you save money on your next holiday?

When to book

Lonely Planet said: “Book early. Most airlines open flights to booking about 11 months before departure. Close to the departure date, cheaper classes fill up and availability dwindles, try to book at least five weeks ahead.”

The team said that attractive last-minute deals are rare and prices will usually increase about 21 days before departure.

Shop the sales

Lonely Planet said: “Many airlines offer sales in January, September and dates such as Black Friday.”

The team recommends signing up for airline newsletters to stay on top of the latest deals and sales.

Compare booking sites

Lonely Planet said: “Booking sites compare routes and airlines, but it’s often useful to compare booking sites.”

The team recommends browsing Skyscanner and Google Flights before settling on a price for your journey.

Getting an upgrade

No one would say no to a first-class seat upgrade on a long-haul flight. Lonely Planet reckons travellers have the best chances if they join a frequent flyer club. Dressing smartly, being polite and arriving early could also help your chances.

Be a mid-week traveller

Lonely Planet said: “Come midweek and you’ll avoid expensive minimum two-night stays and peak transport costs.”

If you do need to travel at the weekend, the team recommends checking a city’s business district for the cheapest rooms and avoiding popular festivals and events.
