Idyllic staycation destination named best in 2024 | Travel News | Travel

Planning a staycation for 2024? The travel expert team at ABTA have shared their destinations to watch and there’s a glorious staycation spot on the list.

Sunshine Saturday, or January 6 this year, is traditionally one of the most popular days to book a holiday with Brits eager for a distraction.

If you’re feeling the urge to book, why not consider a staycation in Shropshire? The underrated English county is the only British spot to make ABTA’s destination to watch list.

A spokesperson said: “This idyllic English county on the Welsh borders has some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, towns and villages.

“Shropshire is a rural gem, but it was also the birthplace of the industrial revolution and history lovers must make a trip to Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge with its elegant eponymous bridge, the first ever built in the world.”

The world’s first ever iron bridge is a sight to behold and tourists can learn more about its illustrious history at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums.

ABTA recommends tourists visit Bridgnorth, the first stop on the Severn Valley Railway and Ludlow, a foodie paradise.

Ludlow has one of the UK’s best castles and its high street is packed with attractive historic buildings.

Nature fans will love the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a hiker’s paradise, with plenty of incredible views.

Bishops Castle is the ideal base to explore the Shropshire Hills and is also home to the country’s oldest working brewery.

In Church Stretton, tourists will find a Norman church and plenty of buildings that date all the way back to Tudor times.
