‘Iconic’ Alton Towers ride set to reopen next weekend with two major changes after 17 month-long refurbishment project

AN ‘iconic’ UK rollercoaster is receiving the finishing touches ahead of its hugely anticipated comeback next weekend.

Alton Tower’s Nemesis Reborn is set to reopen to the public on March 16 after an extensive 17-month project which has overseen a complete refurb of the fan favourite first built in 1994.

Technicians were spotted in cranes inspecting the track’s infamous inverted loop this week ahead of the final week of preparations.

Time-lapse footage released by Alton Towers shows the mammoth effort to deconstruct and restore the 250-tonne track, as well as the installation of over 100 metres of specially-crafted tentacles and innovative audio visual technology.

53-year-old Pete Bartlett, who worked on the original Nemesis construction project over three decades ago, headed the specialist team charged with the monster task of transforming the attraction.

He said: “Over thirty years ago I took the first steps in my construction career at Alton Towers, making indelible memories working side by side with my dad on the original Nemesis build.

“There have been many projects since then, but helping to bring back this iconic coaster is a true career highlight.”

When it first opened in March 1994, Nemesis was Europe’s first inverted rollercoaster and has since travelled the equivalent distance to circling the world over 32 times.

Speaking about the refurb, Bianca Sammut, Divisional Director at Alton Towers Resort, said: “Nemesis is utterly cherished by generations of thrill-seekers.

“As Europe’s first inverted rollercoaster it occupies a special place in the heart for so many.

“At Alton Towers Resort we’ve been working tirelessly to transform this iconic attraction and we’re delighted to give fans a first look at the terrifying creature that gives it its name.

“This year fans will be able to experience the stand-out thrills of Nemesis Reborn for themselves.

“We’re keeping tight-lipped about the exact date of its return for now, but we can assure you, the wait will be worth it.”
