I made Jamie Oliver’s easy French toast recipe – and it’s my new favourite breakfast

French toast is known for its gorgeous fluffy texture thanks to often being made with brioche, topped with syrup and berries.

However, it can also be enjoyed as a savoury dish, more commonly known as eggy bread.

Jamie Oliver’s recipe notes said: “Get the kids involved and introduce them to new ingredients, equipment and skills. Plus, everyone can tuck in straight from the frying pan. You can’t beat it.

“This recipe shows you how to make French toast with a classic recipe topped with yoghurt and fresh berries, but you can mix it up with whatever you fancy. It’s totally versatile, so make it yours.”

Equipment-wise, this recipe calls for a shallow, wide bowl, a fork, a non-stick frying pan and a spatula.

Ingredients:

Two large free-range eggs

Milk

Vanilla extract

Ground cinnamon

Two slices of bread or brioche

Unsalted butter or olive oil

Greek-style yoghurt, to serve

One handful of fresh berries, to serve

Maple syrup, to serve

Method:

To start, simply crack the eggs into a bowl, then add a splash of milk to the bowl.

Add a few drops of vanilla extract along with a pinch of cinnamon and whisk the mixture with a fork.

Once combined, I soaked my brioche slices in the mixture for a couple of minutes, turning halfway as the recipe recommends.

Meanwhile, I melted a little butter in a hot frying pan before adding the egg. Cook for a few minutes without moving the bread, until nice and golden.

Then use a spatula to carefully flip the bread over and cook on the other side until golden.

Transfer to a plate and top with whatever you fancy or have in, I went for Greek yoghurt, berries and maple syrup.

The dish was delicious, the bread was cooked to perfection and Jamie’s recommended toppings were divine.

However, other topping options include sliced banana and chocolate, stewed apple or pear with cinnamon or even crispy smoked bacon with syrup.
