There is nothing more traditionally English than scones topped with jam and butter with a cup of tea, and this tasty British treat is very simple to make yourself.
Mary Berry’s scone recipe takes less than 15 minutes to prepare before it cooks in the oven for 10 minutes, meaning you can have these tasty treats ready in under half an hour.
According to the famous baker, scones are incredibly easy to make once you know not to overwork the dough as the less you handle the scone mixture, the more likely it will stay moist which will result in a lighter and fluffier texture.
She said: “The secret of a good scone is not to have the mixture too dry and not to handle the dough too much.”
This is the best to make for anyone who wishes to treat themselves to some afternoon tea or to celebrate with loved ones on St George’s Day as an excuse to have something truly delicious.

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 220C (200C fan or gas mark 7) and then light grease a baking sheet.
Sieve the flour and baking powder together in a bowl and then add the butter. Rub the mixture together until it resembles breadcrumbs, then add the sugar.
Take your eggs and milk straight from the fridge so they are still cold. Then crack the eggs into a measuring jug and beat them.
Add enough milk to make the liquid in the measuring jug a total of 300ml, but save one tablespoon of the jug to glaze the scones before baking.
Slowly pour the eggy milk mixture into the mixing bowl with the flour, baking powder and sugar and mix until you have a soft and sticky dough.
Lightly flour a kitchen surface, knead the dough lightly and then roll the dough into a rectangle until it is two centimetres thick. You can work in the sultanas while kneading the dough if you wish.
Cut as many rounds as possible with a fluted cutter, and then place the scones on the baking sheet.
Brush the tops with a teaspoon of the eggy milk mixture and then bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes to 15 minutes or until the scones are a pale golden brown colour.
Take out the oven and allow them to cool, and then your delicious scones will be ready to serve with jam, butter or a dollop of clotted cream.
