How to keep carrots crunchy and fresh for longer with mind-blowing storage hack

Food storage is vital to get right for so many different fruit and vegetables like bananas, potatoes and lettuce, and the same goes for carrots too.

There’s always a race to the finish line when you bring home a big batch of carrots from the shop.

Before you know it, it’s the end of the week, and you have bendy and mouldy carrots sitting in your fridge.

Condensation can quickly form around carrots in their store-bought bags which is what causes mould to grow, effectively ruining your efforts to preserve them.

To keep them as fresh as possible, Marissa, who goes by @itsallgoodvegan on TikTok has shared a nifty carrot storage hack.

The food enthusiast titled the video: “Keep your carrots fresh by storing them like this.”

Marissa started the video by showing the camera a bendy carrot and said: “Do your carrots ever look like this? Make your carrots crunch again and last for weeks by following these steps.”

To store them the best way, all you have to do is peel your carrots, cut them into sticks, and place them in a glass jar container filled with water.

She said: “That’s it. Not only will you cut back on food waste, but it makes it incredibly easy when preparing dishes.”

After seeing this way of storing carrots, user @hellohaveaseat commented: “Mind-blowing. Needed this tip earlier today.”

For those who want to store their carrots for longer, they can be kept in the freezer and defrosted when ready to eat.

Chop or dice the carrots and freeze on a tray until solid. Transfer to a sealed container or bag and add a label.

The label should include what the food is and the day it was frozen. Use within a couple of weeks.

When you take food out of the freezer, it’s important to defrost it safely. Don’t defrost at room temperature.

Ideally, defrost fully in the fridge and use within 24 hours. Or, use a microwave on the defrost setting directly before cooking or reheating.

Marissa also pointed out at the end of the video that the same storage hack can be followed to keep celery fresh for longer.
