It is debatable that soft jammy eggs are superior to hard-boiled eggs in terms of texture and taste.
However, achieving the perfect soft-boiled egg might appear to be a simple task, but it is easy to end up with undercooked whites or overdone yolks.
Depending on which chef you ask, the method of boiling an egg varies greatly. Jamie Oliver drops his eggs into boiling water for five minutes.
Nigella Lawson starts with cold water, which she brings to a boil for a minute, then turns the heat off. She also adds a matchstick in the water to prevent any white from escaping if the shell is cracked.
On the other hand, Gordon Ramsay says you should “boil eggs gently” and then place them into a bowl of cold water to stop them from overcooking.
Adding to the discourse online, a TikTok chef has chimed in on her own perfect method to make the “jammiest boiled eggs.”
Baked by Melissa, a popular chef and baker with 2.5 million followers, revealed the exact times you should follow depending on your preferred boiled egg preferences.
The method is simple and easy to follow, she begins by boiling water in a deep pan and adding salt. She then put her eggs in the boiling water and set a timer before preparing an ice bath.
Despite not offering measurements for how much water, each pan has enough water to submerge the eggs completely. To show different types of boiled eggs she removed her eggs after 3 minutes, 6 minutes, 9 minutes, 11 minutes and 12 minutes.
Cracking open her first set of eggs with a spoon she revealed: “This is a three-minute egg, best eaten on toast.” The egg appeared very runny almost like melted butter.
She went on to share: “6-minute eggs are jammy eggs, the ice bath makes the peel come right off.” She then cracks the shells on her 9, 11 and 12-minute eggs.
Cutting into the 6-minute egg she beamed: “The perfect jammy egg.” The whites of the egg were firm yet soft and bouncy whilst the yolk was not as runny as the 3-minute eggs but did not have a firm consistency either.
Heading to the next set of eggs she remarked: “9 is boring, but for an egg salad that would be a great egg. 11, the perfect hard-boiled egg, 12…never go past 12”
She then reiterated “6 minutes always for jammy eggs, 9 minutes are confusing in my opinion, 11 is my perfect hard-boiled egg, 12 minutes for a fully cooked egg and the fancy 3 minute egg to dip your soldier in.”
Melissa ends her video by devouring her jammy egg on a piece of toast with cottage cheese.
Fans of the creator rushed to her comments to speak on their favourite type of boiled egg. One person shared: “6 min is best on ramen and rice!
Another added: “This is entirely correct. I don’t use the salt tho. 6 min eggs – marinate in soy sauce, sugar & toasted sesame oil.” However, many stood up for the 9-minute egg claiming it was the perfect egg.
Someone else quipped: “I do it for 25 seriously.” Another joked: “FINALLY a TikTok to celebrate the egg!”
