Hotel guests fight over ‘annoying’ and ‘ludicrous’ swimming pool behaviour | Travel News | Travel

Whether it’s a shady spot under a palm tree or a seat where you’re close enough to dip your feet in the water, the most coveted swimming pool seating is usually hotly contested.

Many hotels and cruise ships don’t have enough pool seating for all their guests so during busy periods people may be left fighting it out for room.

On Reddit, one guest said they had moved some people’s towels after they had been gone for 20 minutes.

Reddit user ‘EmployeeAlternative3’ said: “We are in Thailand, pool was busy, two loungers were empty but had towels on them for at least 20 minutes.

“We decided to move the towels and claim the beds. A German couple challenged us about 40 minutes later to which we said there was nobody there so we used them.”

‘Chair hogging’ is when people place their stuff on sunbeds and then leave the chairs for hours at a time.

One Reddit user said chair hogging was the “worst practice” ever . They wrote: “It’s the worst practice ever and it only continues because people are too polite to challenge it.

“It’s one thing to step away from your lounger to go to the bar or pop up to your room, especially if you have kids that are too young to be unaccompanied but the practice of dumping a towel on there before breakfast and thinking that reserves your spot for the day is ludicrous.”

Some hotels and cruise ships have a policy that towels can be removed if chairs are left unattended for longer than half an hour.

Another user said: “It’s so annoying. If everyone just came and went organically there would be seats for everyone when they want one.”

However, one guest defended the chair hoggers saying: “I wouldn’t take a lounger after just 20 minutes.
