‘Hilarious’ rival to iconic M&S Colin the Caterpillar spotted in Lidl

Chocolate enthusiasts have been wowed by the latest Colin the Caterpillar knock-off, Ciara.

Marks and Spencer’s iconic Colin the Caterpillar has ruled the roost as a birthday staple for many years, spawning mini versions of the cake along with chocolate mousse pots. Also added to the collection, the M&S caterpillar family was the Giant Caterpillar, Connie, who won scores of fans. Despite Colin the Caterpillar’s status as a 30-year-old classic, there’s been increased competition from similar cakes available at a cheaper asking price.

Chocolate enthusiasts were stunned by Aldi’s announcement that Cuthbert the Caterpillar was returning to their shelves after settling a legal kerfuffle with M&S. Other supermarkets haven’t remained idle, offering their own interpretations of the famed treat, from Tesco’s Slinky version to Waitrose’s Cecil, both priced at £7.50.

But that’s not all: Asda joined in with their own Letty, Sainsbury’s introduced Wiggles, and Morrisons unveiled their mascot named Morris – all three priced at a competitive £7.50. Not to be outdone in the battle of the best caterpillar cake, Lidl has just announced their own creature cake ambassador called Ciara.

A Lidl spokesperson cheekily said: “Meet Ciara, our new caterpillar cake ambassador. Nothing like that other fella. Nolan? Alan? Colin? Ah who cares, Ciara’s here.”

A post on X recently went viral, earning over 377,500 views, after user @BigDirtyFry posted a snap of Ciara the Caterpillar ‘celebration cake’, captioning it: “She has my full support. Caterpillar cakes are a notoriously male dominated industry.”

One follower chimed in: “It’s a very glamorous named for a caterpillar.” “There’s a new girl on the scene,” added another.

One individual who’s had a taste said: “And she’s delicious.” Another hailed the dessert as a “thing of beauty”. A different user quipped: “Excuse me, M&S Connie the Caterpillar cake would like a word.”

“Connie isn’t happy,” joked another.
