Haley Rises in New Hampshire, Trump Dominates Iowa

A new pair of polls from CBS News indicates that even as former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley pulls within striking distance of Donald Trump in New Hampshire, the ex-president is pulling away from the rest of the competition in Iowa.

According to CBS, Haley is riding a wave of momentum in the Granite State, where she was endorsed by Governor Chris Sununu (R) last week. Since the network released the last poll in September, Haley has cut Trump’s lead over her down from a seemingly insurmountable 39 points to just 15.

Trump remains in the driver’s seat with 44%, while Haley (29%), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (11%), Chris Christie (10%), and Vivek Ramaswamy (5%) all trail him, but his trajectory in the state is downward. In September, he had the support of half of all New Hampshire GOP voters. DeSantis was in second place at the time with 13%, while Haley came in third with 11%.

In Iowa, the story is in some ways different and in some ways the same.

Trump has not faltered in the Hawkeye State but extended his already commanding lead from 51% in September to 58% now, while DeSantis comes in at 22%, right around the same mark he reached in the fall. Haley came in third with 13%, five points higher than she did last time.

The Haley and DeSantis campaigns have spent the last several months sparring over which candidates have the best chance of supplanting Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. Haley has touted the contrast she strikes with the frontrunner and momentum as points in her favor, while DeSantis has argued he is more in step with the party’s base.
