South Korean actors Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee showed immense skill and versatility in Gyeongseong Creature Part 1, which premiered in December 2023. The show was already a talk of the town prior to its release for its fresh story, stellar cast, a colonial plotline, all with an adequate amount of horror and thrill. Helmed Chung Dong Yoon, the anticipation for the remaining three episodes only escalated with time. As January 5, 2024 dawned, the anticipation of a well formed conclusion in Part 2. For some, it might not come off as a surprise that the story ended the way it did. For others, it was quite the turn of events!
Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 Ending Explained: Deaths, Time Travel & Lookalikes – Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee starrer season 1 ends with wildest cliffhanger
In both parts, we see how one’s choices shape their future. Jang Tae Sang [Park Seo Joon], who was apolitical all his life, found a purpose to fight for when he got acquainted with Yoon Chae Ok [Han So Hee] and when his eyes opened to the horrors faced by Joseon citizens. The humanity side to him took precedence after he saw the happenings at Ongseong Hospital. Even after the matter is temporarily settled, he chsoses to stay neutral and not join the rebellion. He is the owner of a famous pawn shop and he remains that. Sure, he fought against the Japanese military but that was in a way fueled by his own desires to see his lady love safe and complete his end of a deal. A deep bond of love developed between Chae Ok and Tae Sang over a short span. A lot of the audience wished for no romance angle between the two, but following the story’s progression it was deemed pivotal for that angle to pan out eventually. Their love for each other is what fueled them to do what is right. Tae Sang chose to fight for his fellow citizens, for his love and against the unjust practices. Chase Ok chose her own fate by taking revenge against Dr Ichiro [Hyun Bong Sik]. She chose to do so to protect Tae Sang and help him in his mission. She had anyway lost a will to live after losing her parents, and the only way to bring them to justice was to take a violent action against the wrong doers.
With Chae Ok and her father Yoon Joong Won [Jo Han Chul], we see how a filial bond never breaks. No matter how old the child is, the parent always wishes for them to be safe and healthy. The husband who finally feels at peace after finding his wife wishes to be with her even when she is no longer human. Even in a mutated form as a Najin creature, Chae Ok’s mother showed motherly affection to Chae Ok. She safeguarded Chae Ok when she was in trouble. The visualization of a veiny cage encircling Chae Ok in both parts is a stunning piece to behold.
With characters like Mrs Nawol [Kim Hae Sook], Mr Gu [Park Ji Hwan], Kwon Joon Taek [Wi Ja Joon] and Park Bum Oh [Ahn Ji Ho], we see how power can overpower the human tendency to choose the lesser of two evils. Their characters showed how the oppressors functioned. People were ill-treated and dehumanized to such a level that there was no way but to do what was asked at the end of the day. Despite knowing the truth which would border on betrayal in any other scenario, Jang Tae Sang chooses to see their humane side. He allows them to shed a few tears and sheds tears with them. As he gets to know the reality of everyone through Lady Maeda [Claudia Kim] who is behind the corruption and what is practically happening in Onseong Hospital, he forgives them for their betrayal for he has seen how the colonizers would treat his fellow citizens. He puts his trust in those people with whom he has set up a life. In Tae Sang’s eyes, what those people did does not count as a betrayal for the colonizers’ twisted methods and ideals hold no value to him.
To conclude, Gyeongseong Creature Season one is a complete package for those who want a historical fiction drama commenting on the unjust ways of the oppressors, flawed but strong characters, a stunning visual of horrific creatures, and a lesson on humanity. Park Seo Joon, Han So Hee, Wi Ha Joon, Jo Han Chul and the rest of the cast emoted the story with a great nuance. There was not a moment where it felt that the actors were not true to their story. Since the story is said to take inspiration from real life historic incidents during the Japanese occupation over Korea, it will be quite dramatic to see how the events tie up to the next season. Even before the drama premiered, there were talks about a prospective season two.
After the premiere of Gyeongseong Creature Part 2 on January 5, 2025, season two is indeed confirmed. A short epilogue in the finale episode glimpses into a futuristic setting. We see Park Seo Joon appear in a modern setting with surgical marks on his neck. In the finale episode, the main creature Seishin ceases to exist but not before infecting Chae Ok. Lt. Kato was also seen carrying Myeong Ja’s newborn who also showed signs of mutation.
With the teaser set in modern times, it will be interesting to see how the makers connect these two eras. Perhaps Park Seo Joon’s modern character is an heir to Myeong Ja’s [Ji Woo] child? How does Chae Ok come back to life? What more mysteries does this Najin virus hold? Will we see a dystopian future where such creatures or infected humans are more in number? There are quite a number of possibilities for season two of Gyeongseong Creature. It suddenly feels like season one premiered and ended in the blink of an eye, doesn’t it?
