This action follows the recent deployment of drones by the police to manage traffic on the fast-paced stretch. The drones have been used to identify congestion and issue fines for lane driving violations. The initiative has helped improve response time and ensure better traffic management.
Currently, the enforcement of lane driving rules is limited to commercial vehicles on the expressway. This particular stretch experiences heavy traffic, especially during peak hours when people commute to and from offices in the NCR city.
The traffic police began booking drivers for lane driving violations on January 8. DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij stated, “After successfully using drones to monitor lane violations in December, we have taken a step further by filing FIRs to ensure strict adherence to lane driving norms by commercial vehicles. We will continue to take stringent action against violators.”
The drivers who have been booked so far include those operating trucks, trolley trucks, dumper trucks, mini-trucks, mini-buses, autos, and light commercial vehicles. In the first nine days of this year alone, a total of 1,967 fines have been issued for this offense, resulting in the collection of nearly Rs 20 lakh in fines.
In other traffic related update in Gurgaon, in December, the Gurgaon segment of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway saw the issuance of 1,493 online challans by traffic police, totaling Rs 29.8 lakh, targeting vehicles exceeding 120kmph. This surge in enforcement coincided with the activation of 80 cameras along the 78km stretch. DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij told TOI that these cameras, strategically placed at 16 locations, are linked to the Gurgaon police control room. The system triggers alerts when a vehicle surpasses the 120kmph speed limit, leading to automatic issuance of speed challans. Highlighting the prevalence of high-end cars, including Ferrari, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, and Rolls-Royce, testing their speed capabilities, it was estimated that around 500 vehicles were daily violating speed limits on the expressway. The intensified enforcement followed the inauguration of the 246km Sohna-Dausa stretch in February 2023, with attention heightened after two accidents involving high-end cars were reported.
