Giants unveil 100th anniversary alternate uniforms, met with fan criticism

The New York Giants unveiled an alternate uniform Thursday to commemorate their 100th season. However, the “Century Red” throwback uniforms were met with widespread disapproval on social media.

The uniforms, which could be worn in two games this season, feature a red and blue jersey, tan pants and a winged helmet featuring the same red and blue color scheme. The uniform’s elements reference apparel sported by the Giants during their inaugural season in 1925 and other key moments in franchise history.

“I like the fact that we stick to the legacy,” outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux said in a news release from the team announcing the uniforms.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke said after he saw (and tried on) the uniform for the first time that he felt “like it’s gritty and vintage.”

“It’s a throwback to the 1920s, 1930s when they were out there just getting grimy,” he said. “It’s a testament to all the guys who played before. They paved the way for us to play this great game.”

Fans on social media, however, did not share the same excitement for the uniforms, expressing their disapproval in response to a photo of the uniforms with comments such as “I wanna like these … but the pants ruined them,” and “This was a miss.”

The NFL revised its uniform policy to allow teams to add a third helmet design in April. The league updated its uniform policy in 2022 to allow for a second helmet shell color.
