Gauteng parents must consider township schools

The first day at school was a day of frustration for a number of Gauteng parents as they demanded placement for their children in schools closer to their homes and not township schools.

The Gauteng Department of Education says children have been placed in schools however, parents have refused to accept placement.

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, has requested that parents accept placement for their children in township schools and says, those schools are society’s backbone.

“Every time when we speak of township schools we speak with pride. They have demonstrated over time that those schools with the quality of school leadership, with the quality of educators- results have come”, emphasises Chiloane.

“We have lawyers who come from our township schools. We have doctors who come from our township schools. We have a president who come from our township schools.”

“We have all these people changing the landscape of our society coming from township schools. So there is no way that we should shun from our township schools” Chiloane says.

Meanwhile, disgruntled parents stormed Johannesburg West District Office, demanding placement for their children in specific schools.

Fleurhof parents, claimed that their children are being rejected places in schools in walking distance and have had their children placed as far a Diepsloot, 37km away.

On social media user says her nephew was rejected at a school right across from her home.

@nfdmckenna says, “We live opposite Florida Park(High School) and they want place my nephew at a school in Eldorado Park @EducationGP1 has other levels of madness.”
