Nothing beats a delicious fry-up for breakfast complete with fried eggs, but many people can be put off cooking with oil due to how greasy it is.
Cooking eggs with too much oil can also easily lead to them becoming overcooked with a rubbery texture and having to flip them can cause grease to splatter everywhere.
However, Cari Garcia, a cook and founder of Fat Girl Hedonist, has shared there is an easier and tastier cooking method that is much better than pouring too much oil into a pan.
Cari said: “The secret ingredient for the perfect fried egg is WATER!
“The secret ingredient to perfect fried eggs is adding a tablespoon of water to the pan once your whites have cooked about 80 percent through.
“Once you’ve added the water, you’ll want to immediately cover your pan and allow the steam to finish cooking the egg whites.”
It may sound odd not to cook a fried egg without lots of oil, but steaming results in a more evenly cooked egg as the heat can surround every part of the egg so there is less risk of overcooking.
The moisture from the steam will give the eggs a better taste and texture without the risk of them burning before the egg is fully cooked through.
This is an incredibly easy way to cook a fried egg as you do not have to flip it as the steam will fully cook the top of the egg without needing lots of oil.
Method
All you need to do is place a frying pan on a medium-low heat and only add a tiny splash of oil.
Once the oil is hot, crack your eggs into the frying pan. Cari said: “Crack the egg on a flat surface and gently transfer it to the pan. Avoid breaking the yolk unless you’re going for a sunny-side up.”
When the whites of the egg are almost fully cooked through and the edges are just turning brown, then add enough water to water the pan.
Cover the frying pan with a lid and leave it to steam for 30 seconds to two minutes depending on how you like your eggs.
Remove from the heat and transfer the eggs to a plate. Make sure to use a spatula when moving the eggs.
Cari said: “A good spatula helps you gently lift and transfer the cooked egg without breaking the yolk.”
Season with salt and pepper, and your tastier steamed fried eggs are ready to serve.
If you like soften eggs, then cook for 30 seconds, but if you prefer harder eggs, then cook for one minute to two minutes.
