Five tips to ‘store potatoes correctly’ or risk premature aging

Five things to consider when storing your potatoes

1. Give them proper air flow

Ideally you should store loose potatoes in a mesh bag, carboard box, basket, paper bag or another well-ventilated container. This is because potatoes release carbon dioxide and water in the form of a vapor, which would make a tightly sealed bag get damp.

Before storing away, all potatoes should be inspected for soft spots, sprouts, mold or shovel damage. Cut away damanged areas and use immediately. Only perfect potatoes will last in long-term storage.

2. Keep in dark place out of direct sunlight

Potatoes should not be left out in the open or on your countertop. Rather, they should be tucked away into a dark and cool area. This is because the plants will produce chlorophyll, which will make it turn green and eventually wrinkle and rot when exposed to sunlight.

3. Keep in dry place to avoid moisture

If you keep potatoes in a dark, moist environment similar to how it grows in the ground then it will continue to grow and sprout, which is why it is critical to be kept in a dry place.

4. Keep in a cool environment

Potatoes should be kept in a cool, dark place that is ideally between 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit, such as your pantry or unheated basement. Do not store on top or inside of a refrigerator or near stove.

5. Do not store with other vegetabels or fruits

Potatoes must be stored separately because when stored with other fruits and veggies such as apples, ethylene gas will be produces which makes both produce items rot.
