Cake recipes are some of the easiest to follow and bake, but when it comes to chocolate cakes, it can be tricky.
Some can turn out too dry and lacking a chocolate flavour, whilst others may be too rich and fudgy.
However, a five-ingredient chocolate cake recipe on BBC Good Food claims to be “delicious”.
The recipe notes said: “You are just five ingredients away from the most delicious, fudgy, flourless chocolate cake you have ever tasted.”
This cake can easily be baked in under an hour and costs less than 80p per portion.
Ingredients:
250g salted butter, plus extra for greasing
250g dark chocolate, broken into pieces
Six free-range eggs, separated
250g caster sugar
60g cocoa powder, sifted
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200C or 180C Fan and grease a nine-inch round cake tin before lining it with parchment paper.
Melt the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of gently bubbling water or in the microwave, mix well and then leave to cool.
Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar in a large bowl for three minutes, or until pale in colour and thick in consistency.
Fold in the chocolate mixture very carefully and cocoa powder.
Whisk the egg whites with an electric whisk in a separate bowl until they form stiff peaks. Stiff peaks are when the mixture can stand upright without falling down.
Gently fold the egg white into the chocolate mixture a quarter at a time, until evenly mixed.
Pour the cake batter into the tin and level the surface before baking it for 35 to 40 minutes until risen, cracked and with a very slight wobble in the centre.
Leave the cooked cake to cool on a wire rack but do not worry if it sinks in the middle slightly.
Serve warm or chilled with spoonfuls of ice cream, fresh cream or crême fraîche if you fancy.
