Apple Original Films is bringing a powerful story of resilience and family bonds to the screen with Fancy Dance, premiering globally on Apple TV+ on June 28th, 2024. The film stars Academy Award-nominated actress Lily Gladstone as Jax, a woman who takes on the responsibility of caring for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) after her sister’s mysterious disappearance. Set against the backdrop of their Tribal Land, Jax juggles the daily struggles of making ends meet while fiercely searching for her missing sister.

But amidst this turmoil, a ray of hope emerges: Roki is preparing for an upcoming powwow, a traditional gathering that celebrates Indigenous culture through dance and music. Determined to support her niece’s dream, Jax dedicates every spare moment to helping Roki prepare for the competition.
However, their life takes an unexpected turn when Jax faces the risk of losing custody of Roki to the girl’s grandfather, Frank (played by Shea Whigham). Faced with this threat, Jax and Roki embark on a daring road trip, venturing deep into the backcountry to find Roki’s mother before the powwow. This desperate search for family transforms into a profound journey of self-discovery, forcing them to confront the harsh realities faced by Indigenous women in a world marked by colonialism and a flawed justice system.
Fancy Dance is a poignant exploration of the complexities of family ties. Gladstone and Deroy-Olson deliver heartfelt performances, showcasing the unwavering bond between aunt and niece as they navigate a challenging situation. The film boasts a talented supporting cast, including Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski, and Shea Whigham.
Erica Tremblay, making her feature directorial debut, co-writes the script with Miciana Alise, weaving a powerful narrative that sheds light on the struggles faced by Indigenous communities. Deidre Backs, Erica Tremblay, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Tommy Oliver co-produce the film, while Bird Runningwater, Lily Gladstone, Forest Whitaker, and Charlotte Koh serve as executive producers.
